Monkey Island Horse Creek • Bernice • West Grand Lake

If you’re looking for diversity, this region of the lake for you! There’s horseback riding, trails to walk, para-sailing and awesome fishing. Auto enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Car Hall of fame. Motels, condos, cabins and RV parks offer a variety of accommodations. For fun on the water several marinas will rent lake transportation and help you stock up your cooler; or you can hit the links for some land based fun. Winding around Afton and into Grand Lake, Horse Creek is a good spot for great fishing and wildlife viewing. Bald eagles, osprey, white pelicans, geese and ducks migrate through and winter here.

MONKEY ISLAND

Monkey Island is a strip of land in the center of the widest part of the lake consisting of 3,500 acres, 7 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide. The hub of Grand Lake’s nightlife, Monkey Island offers lots of choices from a 20’s-style nightclub to live club entertainment year-round. Some of the lake’s best restaurants are located here and shoppers can browse for antiques, art and other enticing items. The majority of fishing and golf tournaments are held on the Island. Easy to reach by land, water and air.

 

The Royal Horse Ranch is the place to go for a leisurely trail ride along the shores of Grand Lake. In the fall you may want to experience for the first time or again a real hay ride.

BERNICE

Known as “the Crappie Capital” Bernice is a small town with a big heart. It is home to marinas and bait shops, resorts and campgrounds, good restaurants, banks various shopping entities and many lake service firms. When it comes to heart, this community comes together. The Bernice Fire Department purchased the first Water & Rescue Boat for safety on the lake. As part of The Cleora Emergency Medical Service District (CEMSA) a new ambulance station has been constructed. They now provide advanced paramedic level service around the clock 24/7 for residents in the South Grand Lake area of Delaware County.

Nostalgia buffs visit Afton to travel its nine-mile stretch of original Route 66 running through town. Antique dealers, flea markets and craft shops line the historic route. Afton Station which was originally a DX service station has been restored and converted into a Route 66 visitor stop and vintage Packard museum.
